The confusing part is understanding I-Pac VE. (I’m currently looking for a real box, but for the DJ on a very tight budget, almost ANY box will do!) 8x Arcade Buttons ($2.19 each from DJTECHTOOLS.COM).Well… this, Ladies and Gentlemen, could be exactly what you’re looking for, and costing a grand total of only £35 this is not as stupid as you first though it was, now is it? We all know how expensive MIDI controllers are, and if anything the prices keep on rocketing up. But truth be told this is not only my most successful piece of DIY to date (and it could fall apart at any minute… I’m yet to solder the wires or buy a proper box) but it’s also my favourite piece of equipment in my DJ arsenal. Now I know what you’re thinking… “What the hell is that?!” And to a certain extent you’re right. So I decided that I would try and design a prototype model of 8 arcade buttons housed in a small box to replace my keys and take over the ever-so-important task of cue point juggling… I have assigned 8 keys in total (F,G,A and B on two octaves) controlling 4 hot cues on each of decks A and B, but keys just don’t have the right feel when you’re wanting to bash out those fast rhythms and get all creative on the fly. However what I feel it lacks is an outlet to take advantage of the 8 hot cues you can assign to each deck in traktor. My Novation 25SL MK2 covers most of what I need to do to control Traktor Pro in an interesting and innovative way ( tutorial and review to come). Hundreds of pounds of my mothers money later I finally gave up what seemed to be a never ending project and was forced to put aside my useless hunk of plastic and circuits…īut my inner child’s enthusiasm for making something with my very own two hands was recently revived after reading about the amazing (and sometimes rediculous) DIY projects some of the members of DJ Techtools had posted in the forum and after reading a couple of articles by Ean Golden on the aforementioned site about making a small MIDI controller. I remember once as a young boy being a subscriber to a fortnightly magazine which took me through the steps of building my very own robot. So I have always been a bit of a geek… and part and parcel of being a geek is having an interest in a bit of DIY in some way, shape or form. If the answer to this is no then I suppose you can sit this one out, or you may wish to continue reading and perhaps by the end of this article i will have convinced you to do so…
